KNOTT'S BERRY FARM - HISTORY OF THE CALICO SALOON
Knott's Berry Farm is one of the premier attractions in Southern California. Two of Knott's unique attractions are the Bird Cage Theater and the Calico Saloon

The Bird Cage Theater is the longest running Melodrama playhouse in the country. For those of you unfamiliar with the American melodrama style, picture the evil villain with a curled moustache dressed in a black cape as he ties a beautiful girl to the railroad tracks!

This style of theater was very active in the 20's and one of the most popular forms of entertainment in those times. A pianist accompanies all the action and stage movement with mostly improvised music cues and dramatic sequences.

The Calico Saloon is set in the Wild West of the Late 1800's. It's not uncommon for a gunfight or two from the street players to interrupt the show unexpectedly. These shows are still running at Knott's Berry Farm. The Saloon is located just off the center stage, stop in next time you're at Knott's Berry Farm!

Many performers received their acting training from the Bird Cage Theater, among them comedian Steve Martin

Pianist Conrad Askland (left photo) performed at Knott's Berry Farm in both the Calico Saloon and the Bird Cage Theater from 1994-1996.

The History of Knott's Berry Farm
By Bob Barber Bear-yTales.com

Knott's Berry Farm is considered to be a happy accident throughout the theme park industry. It was never intended to be an amusement park, but here it is over 75 years later...alive and well. The history behind Knott's is one that is unique to the Theme Park Industry. Its history tells a story that is hard to find at Knott's anymore

The story of Knott's Berry Farm doesn't begin with the amusement park everyone knows of. It doesn't start with the Marketplace or Chicken Dinner Restaurant. It starts in the 1920's with a lone, roadside berry stand in the area that now is know as the California Marketplace

Walter Knott was a hard and honest worker. He survived the drought, famine, scorching sun, and the Great Depression. Walter Knott was a well educated man who would not let hardships get the best of him. His secret was a new kind of berry that was hearty, sweet, and full of flavor. The Boysenberry made the Knott's famous, but what many people don't know is that Walter Knott did not invent the fruit made from a cross between a blackberry, a red raspberry, and a loganberry

The Boysenberry was named after it's founder, Ralph Boysen, who thought that his experiment was a failure until Mr. Knott showed up. He was given permission to salvage the few berry plants that were left on Mr. Boysen's farm, and brought it to his own little farm in Buena Park. There, he raised the berries back to strong, wholesome plants, and made sure these berries were the basis of all of the jams, jellies and pies that quickly become the calling card of Knott's Berry Farm

Walter Knott always had a long line at his berry stand, as people would come from miles around to try this new berry. Thinking that some of their guests may become hungry, Mrs. Knott began serving up dinners of fried chicken made from her own recipe. Those first dinners were served on their good wedding china and were an instant success. Word quickly got around that great chicken dinners were to be found at the berry farm, and soon more people came than the little restaurant could hold. The size of the restaurant soon doubled, but still the demand was to high. In 1936 the Knott's added even more room, yet the lines were so long at times that Walter could not see the end, as it was hard to find a restaurant that served good food at an inexpensive price. Soon, people were waiting in lines for hours just to get a taste of Mrs. Knott's Chicken Dinners. Even then, Mrs. Knott insisted that she was not in the restaurant business

Always putting profit right back into the Farm, Walter Knott thought that it was necessary to give patrons of the Chicken Dinner Restaurant something to do while they waited their turn to eat. He wanted to build something as a tribute to the Old West and the pioneers who opened it up to the world. Thus the idea of Ghost Town was born. Authentic buildings from Prescott, Arizona were brought in - the first being the Old Trails Hotel. Inside that hotel was the show that showcased the pioneering spirit of the Old West. The Covered Wagon Diorama was born and soon, many other building were brought in - fun peek-ins, a talking inmate named "Sad Eye Joe", an old Kansas School house, a Blacksmith's workshop, etc. Ghost Town was given to the public - free of charge. Its purpose was to educate as well as entertain and still does so today, having changed little through the years.
